Cable connectors are defined as "mechanical cable entry equipment" for the cabling and wiring of electrical, instrumentation, control and automation systems, including lighting, power, data and telecommunications.

The cable gland's primary function is as a sealing and termination device to ensure protection of electrical equipment and enclosures, including the provision of:

Environmental protection - protects electrical or meter housing from dust and moisture through sealing of external cable sheathing.

Ground continuity - In the case of armored cables, the cable gland is of metal construction. In this case, the cable joints can be tested to ensure that they can withstand the appropriate peak short circuit fault current.

Holding force - on the cable to ensure adequate level of mechanical cable "pull out" resistance.

Additional seal - when a high degree of inlet protection is required, at the part where the cable enters the housing.

Additional environmental sealing - At the cable entry point, the entry protection class of the enclosure is maintained by selecting applicable accessories dedicated to performing the function.

Cable joints may be constructed from metallic or non-metallic materials (or a combination of both), which may also be resistant to corrosion, depending on the selection criteria or by passing corrosion resistance tests.

Especially when used in explosive environments, it is essential that, for the type of cable chosen, the cable joints are approved and that the level of protection of the connected equipment is maintained.
